DIY Sunglasses Organizer

Inspired by a post I saw on pinterest (which links to this blog post) I decided to make my very own sunglasses holder/memo frame.    I have a bit of a sunglasses addiction and they all end up in my car.  When I cleaned out my car to hang them on the frame, there were 5 pairs in there.  I never need 5 pairs of sunglasses in my car.  My car doesn’t even seat 5 people!

I found the frame in the basement of Decatur Estate for $5!  I took tiny hooks that I had leftover from another project and screwed them into the frame in regular intervals.  Then I laced them up like a corset…or like a shoe…whichever…with garden twine.  Et-voila.  Sunglasses holder with plenty of room if my problem continues to grow…and spots to clip cards and notes if I want!

Now that I think about it, I’m missing at least one pair….hmmmm.

First Week of School Done – Celebrating with a Cocktail!

Mint Juleps are my favorite summer cocktail (school may have started, but it’s still summer ok?!)– they’re a no brainer when you have a mint plant in the garden that just won’t quit.  I also, no surprise, have a little honey around (not mine yet, but local and raw and tasty).  So I decided to make my own version of the classic.

First of all – Minty Honey Simple Syrup:

Fill a mason jar (or equivalent) about a third full of mint leaves.  Then 1/2-2/3 full of tap water as hot as you can get it to come out.  The rest of the space in the jar should be filled with honey!  Leave a little “headspace” in there for future shaking.  I like to stir or swirl it a little at first as it’s cooling and then close it up and give it a good shake.  Steep that as is for at least 20-30 minutes…get it good and minty.  Shake it occasionally.  I like to make mine the night before and then leave it in the fridge to really get good and steeped.

Next, strain all the leaves out – and combine with a good bourbon (Four Roses is my current fave) at 1 part syrup to 2 parts bourbon.  I like mine sweet!  I’ve also seen a shot an a half of bourbon to 2.5 tablespoons of syrup…but that’s too precise for my taste.

Serve over crushed ice in a julep cup if you’ve got the gear…or regular ice in something you like drinking out of…and obviously garnish with more fresh mint.  Delish!

School Starts This Week!

To say that I’m nervous would be an understatement.  New kids, new state, new a lot of things.  I sent my desk up today…I really hope I can keep it looking about like this, although I pretty much doubt it!  Being a teacher means I get to be extra crafty and also have an outlet for my love of office supplies!

I’m super obsessed with Nikki McClure.  I get her calendar every year and then cut the previous year’s calendar up and use the images as note cards.  I have a handful of the words from 2013 stuck on my wall by my desk.  2015’s just came out and went right on my Christmas list.  If you want to check it out, it’s here!

I’ve also been working on a classroom library for a little while.  I’m actually up around 100 books these days, which has taken quite a bit to acquire.

This isn’t quite all of them, I realized after I took this photo that I still had a small box of them to go….but for this one brief moment they are alphabetized.  Sigh…

Everyone I know is pregnant.

Pretty much everyone I know is pregnant, so even though it’s stinkin’ hot, I’m knitting my little fingers off.  I need to get all the baby blankets done before school starts or I just won’t have time!  Because I had 3 that I knew I wanted to do, I picked a simple pattern that I could internalize and do in my sleep.

The first one went to Baby Olivia who lives in Spain and is my honorary niece.  I lived with her mama’s family when I was an exchange student in Spain in the 90s and her proud Tia Eri (pictured with her) lived with my family and me in the states for a month or so.  I’m so happy to still be connected with that wonderful family!

The second one went to Baby Risa, my cousin’s baby.  I had to SPEED through it because she had the baby two weeks early!  Risa means laughter, I love it!

The third one went to one of my besties who isn’t due until around Thanksgiving, but I wanted to get it done! 🙂

The pattern is from Espace Tricot and the yarn is Knitpicks Shine Worsted.
